How Our Physiotherapists Treat Scoliosis in London

Treatment differs and depends on various factors, such as

  • The patient’s age.
  • Whether they are still growing.
  • The severity of the curve.
  • The exact location of the curve.
  • The chance that scoliosis may progress.

At BabyPhysio London we have years of experience treating children of all ages with scoliosis. We carry out a full assessment of your child’s spine in order to detect the causes of the curve, and we create a personalised treatment plan depending on the factors described above. We then carry out musculoskeletal work in order for your child to regain good posture and to prevent the scoliosis from progressing further

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a back condition that causes the spine to curve to the side, resulting in bad posture and back pain. It develops in children and adolescents, between the ages of 9 and 16 from growth spurts during puberty. It differs from kyphosis (convex curvature of the spine in the thoracic region) and lordosis (inward curvature of the lumbar and cervical regions of the spine), as the curve in scoliosis is to the side.

How Scoliosis Occurs and how to Detect Scoliosis in Children

In most cases, scoliosis occurs gradually and if it’s not severe it can be painless. You can detect scoliosis by looking at your child’s back from behind. If the spine has a sideways curve in the lower part of the spine (lumbar curve), in the upper part of the spine (thoracic curve), or a curve that goes from the upper to lower part of the spine that has an ‘S’ shape (thoracolumbar curve), your child has scoliosis.

What is the Most Common Scoliosis in Children?

There are different types and causes of scoliosis, but idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type. It has no specific identifiable causes, however if left untreated, it can become a severe issue and cause problems such as chronic back pain, disfigurement in the ribs, shoulder blades or pelvis, breathing problems or even heart problems. Scoliosis in children and teenagers can be treated with physiotherapy. The earlier the treatment begins, the better the chances to correct the issue.
